The Pi 5 is still the default answer, and it's getting more complicated

For a lot of "I just want to try self-hosting" cases, I'd still suggest a Pi. But once you add an NVMe hat, a decent power supply, and a case, a used mini PC is often cheaper and faster.

What do you actually tell beginners now?

Used office mini PC, every time, unless they specifically want the GPIO.

Whatever they've already got in a drawer. An old laptop even comes with a built-in UPS.

The built-in UPS argument gets me every time.

Power draw matters if it's running 24/7, but honestly people overthink it at the start.
